January 2025 Mark the calendar! We aren’t close to AGI. We won’t be in another year either. I don’t think GenAI is all hype however. What got my goat today? The articles that OpenAI’s o3 was "close to AGI as long as it ran on an unlimited budget for compute spend" is a triumph of spin over critical thinking. The staggering market cap of AI centered companies has made these kind of claims delicious clickbait, I know. They are still crap. GenAI isn’t all hype and empty promises, it has durable, useful domains - this is even with a reasonable spend on existing tech - but these tasks while useful to business aren’t sexy - back office function optimization, document work around roles like customer support and of course, developer assist. Sexy or not, these matter and are helping some today. Agentic AI is the late 2024 buzzword that promises to bring more context to new kinds of automation and greatly expand the job functions GenAI can integrate with. I am neutra...
